Kiln-Dried vs Seasoned Firewood: What’s the Difference?
Kiln-Dried vs Seasoned Firewood: What's the Difference?
When you're shopping for firewood, you'll often come across two main types: kiln-dried and seasoned. But what's the difference, and why does it matter? If you want to get the most heat from your wood burner while keeping maintenance low, understanding this distinction is essential.
What is Seasoned Firewood?
Seasoned firewood is wood that has been cut and left to dry naturally, typically for 1-2 years. During this time, the moisture content gradually reduces as the wood is exposed to air and weather. The process relies entirely on natural conditions – sun, wind, and time.
The challenge with seasoned wood is that its quality can vary significantly. Weather conditions in North Wales mean that even "seasoned" wood stored outdoors can reabsorb moisture during our wet winters. There's also no guaranteed moisture content – it depends entirely on how long it's been stored and in what conditions.
What is Kiln-Dried Firewood?
Kiln-dried firewood has been dried in a controlled environment using a kiln. At our facility in North Wales, we use a biomass boiler system that runs on woodchip to create the heat for our kilns. This allows us to reduce the moisture content to below 20% – often as low as 10-15% – in a matter of days rather than years.
The kiln-drying process gives us complete control over the final product. Every batch meets the same high standard, and the wood is protected from the elements throughout the drying process.
Why Moisture Content Matters
The moisture content of your firewood directly affects:
- Heat output: Wet wood wastes energy evaporating water before it can produce heat
- Efficiency: Dry wood burns hotter and longer, meaning you use less
- Cleanliness: High-moisture wood creates more smoke, soot, and tar buildup in your chimney
- Ease of lighting: Dry wood ignites quickly and burns steadily
Wood with a moisture content above 20% is considered too wet to burn efficiently. Ideally, you want firewood at 20% or below – something guaranteed with kiln-dried wood but uncertain with seasoned alternatives.
The Benefits of Kiln-Dried Firewood
Consistent Quality: Every load has the same low moisture content, so you know exactly what you're getting.
Ready to Burn Immediately: No need to store it for months or years – use it straight away.
Cleaner Burning: Less smoke means less pollution and a cleaner chimney, reducing the risk of chimney fires.
More Heat: With moisture content typically between 10-15%, kiln-dried wood delivers maximum heat output.
Better Value: Whilst kiln-dried wood costs more per unit, you'll use less of it thanks to its superior burning efficiency.
Our Sustainable Approach
At NW Logs, our kiln-drying process is powered by our own biomass boiler system, which runs on woodchip. This means we're using wood waste to create the energy needed to dry your firewood – a circular, carbon-neutral approach that's better for the environment.
The result? Premium quality firewood that's been dried sustainably right here in North Wales.
Making the Right Choice
If you want consistent, high-quality firewood that burns efficiently and cleanly, kiln-dried is the clear winner. Whilst seasoned wood can work well if it's been properly stored for long enough, the unpredictability of our Welsh weather makes it a gamble.
With kiln-dried firewood from NW Logs, you're guaranteed wood that's ready to burn, delivers maximum heat, and has been produced using sustainable methods.
